Trick or Treat

Steeds meer Amerikaanse gewoonten en gebruiken waaien over naar Nederland. Zo ook Halloween. De wijkvereniging organiseerde dit jaar voor het eerst een Halloween feestje.

Aangezien het hier dus niet gebruikelijk is om op 31 oktober ’s avonds op alle deuren te kloppen, was er een route uitgezet. Op een lijst stonden de adressen van mensen die hadden laten weten klaar te zijn voor een stoot snoep hongerige kinders.

Onze buurman was het eerste 'slachtoffer'….

And Jochem [only 10 minutes before we had to leave he decided he wanted to wear his Bama outfit. Sorry y'all, but this way we did have the Iron Bowl out on the street.]

More and more American habits and customs are finding their way to the Netherlands. Like Halloween for instance.

Our subdivision organized its first Halloween party. And since it’s not really established here to go knock on doors on October 31st, they planned a route with addresses of people who were participating. Claiming to be ready for a bunch of candy hungry youngsters.

Our own dear neighbor was the first ‘victim’….

Go Fish!

De gedachte is er…nu nog de uitwerking.
Van een voetenbankje heeft ze een boot gemaakt en met een hengel die bedoeld is om magneten visjes te vangen wil ze haar schijfjes appel binnen halen.

Ze is geduldig
Probeert het telkens weer
Maar dan zoekt ze toch een betere oplossing.



She came up with a great idea…only the details.
She made a boat out of a footstool and with a rod meant to catch magnetic fish she wanted to reel her apple slices in.
She is patient…tries over and over…but then she thinks of a better way.

Tomboy in disguise

De alternatieve versie van een wolf in schaapskleren. Onze kleine rauwdouwer in een prinsessenjurk.

Vanmiddag lag ze nog schaterend languit in een diepe plas op het schoolplein. En vanavond, fris uit bad, moest de ’Seeuwitje’ jurk toch nog snel even aan.

Ik ben er nog niet uit welke kant ik van haar het leukste vind. Zijzelf ook niet.

Hou ze maar lekker allebei, lieve meid!

Our own variety of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. A little tomboy in a princess gown.

This afternoon she was lying face down and still giggling in a huge puddle on the schoolyard. And tonight, after a refreshing bath, she just had to put on her ‘Sow White’ dress real quick.

I can’t decide which part of her I like best. Neither can she.

Please keep them both, sweet girl!

Nog meer lampions

We hebben de deadline van aanstaande woensdag ruimschoots gehaald. Alle drie de lampionnen zijn klaar voor Halloween.

Nadat ik de tweede lampion af had [dit keer een eigen ontwerp van een ‘lieffeheerbees’ voor Minke], wilde onze super creabea Thijmen zelf aan de knutsel.

Hij is er lekker zoet mee geweest en het resultaat mag er zijn. Zelfs Jochem moest erkennen dat dit de aller aller aller vetste was, helemaal nadat we ze hebben uitgetest in het donker.

We have made the deadline of this coming Wednesday easily. All three lanterns are ready for Halloween.

After completing the second one [this time I did use my own creative brain cells for a ‘lazybuck’ for Minke] our arts-and-crafts lover Thijmen wanted to create his own.

It has kept him pretty occupied and it shows. Even Jochem had to agree this was the coolest of the coolest lantern, especially after testing them in the dark.

Fleurige boeketjes

Je leven stelt toch niets voor zonder lieve familie en loyale vrienden.

Gister kwam mijn zus met haar kids op bezoek en nam een fleurig herfstboeketje voor me mee. Alleen daar kan ik al blij van worden =)

Maar ze ging nog veel verder … aan het eind van de dag nam ze Thijmen gezellig mee, voor een spontane logeerpartij. Hij was helemaal door het dolle heen. En ook zijn ‘neechtjes’ waren blij met deze actie van moeders.

Vandaag dus een iets rustigere dag [want het is toch best te merken als hij er niet is] komt ineens de volgende verrassing aan de deur. Weer een schitterend boeket, nu van vriendin E. ‘Zomaar’ staat er op het kaartje. En ‘Voor de laatste loodjes!’

Ik ben helemaal ontroerd.

There’s no life without sweet family and loyal friends.

Yesterday my sister and her kids came for a visit and treated me to a colorful fall bouquet. That alone already can brighten up my day =)

But she took it a little further…at the end of the day Thijmen also got in her car for a very spontaneous sleepover. He was so excited. And also his cousins were thrilled with their moms act of kindness.

So today it’s a little less busy than usual [we do notice his absence] and then the next surprise arrived at my door. Yet another lovely bouquet. A sweet surprise from friend E. ‘No reason’ the card says. And ‘to get you through the final days!’.

I’m deeply moved.

Lampion 1

Lekker creatief aan het knippen, vouwen, verven en plakken geweest.

Volgende week wordt ook hier in de buurt Halloween gevierd, dus moesten er lampions komen.

De eerste is nu af. Het idee totaal gestolen van de website van ‘juf Ilona’.

Ach beter een goede kopie, dan een slecht origineel ;-)

Been very creative with scissors, scoring blade, paint and (hot) glue.

Next week we are also celebrating Halloween here, so we’re in need of some lanterns.

Sharkboy has a Gap

Een gat, een gat, een GAT!

Voor het eerst heb ik een wisselend kind met een fietsenrek. Thijmen verloor vanmiddag zijn derde tand en tot mijn grote verbazing zit er nu een groot gapend gat.

Ja ja, ik hoor je al denken…maar bij mijn kinderen is dat echt bijzonder. Ik heb namelijk kleine haaitjes...

De nieuw tand staat er al voor de oude verdwijnt. Dus als na lang wiebelen en wikken het babytandje er eindelijk uitfloept, staat er altijd een prachtige ‘grote mensen tand’ klaar.

Ik heb nog eens goed gekeken, maar nee echt niks te bekennen. In zijn onderkaak staan al wel twee nieuwe tanden klaar, terwijl de ouden nog niet eens los zitten. Maar voor die boventand dus niet.

Dit is zo maf ;-), maar ook zo super stoer! =)



A gap, a gap, a GAP!

For the very first time my changing child is having a parking space in his mouth. Thijmen lost his third tooth this afternoon and to my big surprise there’s this huge gap now.

I know what you're thinking now…but with my kids that is really special. As I’m the mother of little sharks...

Normally their new tooth has already broken through before the old baby tooth has disappeared. So when after lots of wiggling and jerking the tiny tooth finally pops out, there’s always this new shining ‘grown up tooth’.

I did a thorough search, but no there’s nothing there. In his lower jaw there are already two new teeth waiting, while the old ones aren’t even loose yet. But not for this new front tooth.

This is so odd ;-), but also extremely cool! =)

Een pot vol jeugdsentiment

Als een foto meer dan duizend woorden kan zeggen, kan een smaak wel duizend herinneringen ophalen.

Vandaag zag ik deze pot bij de HEMA staan. Misschien verkopen ze ‘m al langer hoor, maar voor mij is-ie nieuw. Hoewel nieuw….eigenlijk juist hartstikke oud!

Ik zag de kaneelkussentjes, peren- en frambozen snoepjes en kon hem toen echt niet meer laten staan. Minke’s oogjes begonnen ook te glimmen. Snoep heeft altijd dat effect op haar. Jammer alleen dat deze snoepjes keihard zijn en die krijgt ze nog niet. Maar meelij hoeven we met haar niet te hebben, HEMA verkoopt ook heerlijke zachte dropjes ;-).

Grappig is dat de smaken voor de jongens nieuw zijn en voor mij brengen ze juist zoveel herinneringen terug.

Het is gewoon een pot vol jeugdsentiment.

Today I bumped into this jar at the HEMA [department store]. Maybe they’re selling it for some time already, but to me it’s new. Although new…..actually it’s very old!

I saw the peardrops, cinnamon and raspberry candy and I was sold. Minke’s eyes immediately got this special glow. Candy does that to her. Only too bad this candy is hard as a rock, so she can’t have it yet. But don’t feel too sorry for her, HEMA also sells very yummy soft liquorice she loves ;-).

Funny the different flavors are all new to the boys while to me they bring back so many memories.

It’s simply a jar full of childhood sentiment.

In de ban van Catan

Aangemoedigd door oom en tante is Jochem helemaal in de ban van Catan.
Helaas heb je voor dit bordspel minstens 3 spelers nodig. Ik wil het best met hem spelen, maar in Thijmen vinden we niet echt een tegenstander. Die vindt alle spellen leuk, zolang ze maar binnen een kwartier zijn afgelopen [van wie zou-ie dat nou hebben].
Een oplossing is gevonden in het computerspel Catan. Nu zit hij gezellig met zijn nieuwe beste vrienden Toshi en Suleika uren te ‘catannen’. Ze kunnen er alledrie geen genoeg van krijgen.
Af en toe best handig van die virtuele vrienden =)




Encouraged by his uncle and aunt Jochem is totally absorbed by Catan.
However to play the board game you need at least three people. I don’t’ mind playing it occasionally, Thijmen on the other hand could care less. He likes board games, as long as they last no longer than 15 minutes [who’s influence might that be].
A solution is found in Catan for the computer. Now Jochem and his new best friends Toshi and Suleika are playing the game for hours. All three can't get enough of it.
Every once in a while it's not bad having some virtual friends =)

Doodmoe maar voldaan

Zo’n tien uur op sjouw met de kinderen geweest vandaag. We kwamen kapot thuis, maar wat een heerlijke dag.

Allereerst vertrokken we richting midden Nederland voor de laatste Thuis-Front-Dag [voor ons dan YEEEEEEAH]. De vijf minuten live met papa kunnen praten via de webcam, blijft voor de kinderen de krent in de pap en alleen daarvoor willen ze met alle liefde twee uur in de auto zitten. Zelf wilde ik er wat meer uitslepen, dus had wat plannetjes in mijn hoofd.

Buiten de 5 minuten live verbinding was er sowieso weer voldoende te doen op de TFD. Minke en Thijmen wilden wel een metamorfose ondergaan, terwijl broerlief een lampion aan het knutselen was. Aan de inwendige mens was ook gedacht en vandaag was er een Italiaans buffet. Dat is altijd aan ons besteed en helemaal het Italiaanse nagerecht. Een heerlijk ijsje van Mister Ice Cream [de pestkop, hè Minke].

Met de ijsjes in de hand zijn we in de auto gestapt op weg naar de eerste verrassing. Bezoekje aan oom, tante en nichtje [wens van Thijmen deels in vervulling, nog 4 neven en 5 nichtjes te gaan ;-)]. Op zich was dat natuurlijk al ontzettend leuk, maar mama wilde twee vliegen in een klap slaan [we hebben nog meer wensen te vervullen deze vakantie], dus is Minke gezellig met haar kleine nichtje gaan spelen en zijn mama en broers er tussen uit geknepen om naar de film te gaan.

Helaas geen Surf’s Up, maar wel Ratatouille. Ook leuk en Jochem is niet zo kieskeurig, dus met deze film is ook zijn wens vervuld :p Film duurde een stuk langer dan ik had ingecalculeerd, maar ik wilde niet flauw zijn, dus nadat we Minke weer hadden opgehaald, gingen we toch richting verrassing nummer 3….

McDonalds. De rij binnen was veel langer dan die van de Drive Thru, dus gewoon vanuit de auto de happy meals gehaald en doorgereden naar opa en oma [3 minuten] om daar alles lekker op te peuzelen.

Inmiddels was het 7 uur geweest en zijn we maar weer naar huis gereden. Daar begroette een wild enthousiaste beardie ons. De arme stakker. We hebben allemaal uitgebreid met hem geknuffeld en zo was zijn dag ook weer goed.

Het was een lange dag. Ik ben doodmoe, maar wel heel voldaan.

A busy program with the kids today. We got home totally beat, but it was a terrific day.

First we left for Central Holland this morning for the last meeting of the Waiting Families Program [the last one for us that is, YEEEEEAH]. The five minutes we get on these meetings to see and talk to dad on the webcam are very precious to the kids. And they don’t mind spending two hours in the car for it. I on the other hand, like to get more out of it, so I made some secret plans.

After the live session with dad, they had plenty of other activities already. Minke and Thijmen thought it was time for a makeover, while Jochem was making a lantern at the arts and craft section. Lunch was also taken care of. A very nice Italian buffet, with ofcourse a delicious Italian dessert at Mister Ice Cream [boy was he a tease, right Minke ;-)].

With three ice cream cones we got in the car on our way to surprise number one. A visit to uncle, aunt and baby cousin [partially granting Thijmen’s wish, 9 more cousins to go ;-)]. Sure a nice surprise, but I had more in store. While we left Minke playing joyfully with her cousin, mom and the boys snug out to go see a movie.

Unfortunately not Surf’s Up, but we did see Ratatouille. A fun movie too and Jochem isn’t that picky, so it still counts as a granted wish :p The movie took a lot longer than I thought it would take, but I didn’t want this to spoil the other surprises I had in mind. So after picking up Minke, we did go to...

McDonalds to get our dinner. The lines inside were terrible, so we took the Drive Thru, drove to grandpa and grandma [3 minute drive] and ate the happy meals there. Around 7 we had to break it up and go home. One very happy beardie jumped on us. Poor thing. We all hugged and played with him for a while, so his day ended good as well.

It was a long day. I’m exhausted, but very content.

Pompoenen Expo

OK de website en naam ’Sanders Pompoenen Expo’ deed het allemaal wat grootser lijken, maar het was toch een leuk bezoek.

We hebben echt pompoenen en kalebassen gezien, waar we de namen nu nog steeds niet van uit kunnen spreken [of onthouden].

En de enorme variatie was wel enorm indrukwekkend.

Hoe kleinschalig het ook was, het leverde in ieder geval genoeg foto’s op =)

OK their website and name ‘Sanders Pumpkins Expo’ made it all sound a bit bigger than it really was, but still we had a nice visit.

We’ve seen pumpkins and calabashes, who’s names we still cannot pronounce [nor recall].

And the enormous variety was simply amazing.

Even for a rather small exposition, I was still able to take quite the amount of pictures =)

Laatste nieuws…..

Wie wil er horen dat Rita Verdonk haar eigen partij TON (Trots Op Nederland) heeft opgericht?

Wie wil er horen dat leraren zich tegenwoordig weer veilig op scholen voelen?

Wie wil er horen dat Lego vijftig jaar bestaat?

Leuke nieuwsfeiten hoor, maar ik heb veel belangrijker nieuws…

Minke had gisteren haar eerste Helemaal-Droge-Dag!!!!! Geen enkel ongelukje.

Ze heeft zelf besloten dat het tijd was om zonder luier door het leven te gaan en ze heeft het prima gedaan. We hadden al wat try-outs gehad. En eigenlijk dacht ik van de zomer al dat de klus was geklaard. Maar toen besefte ze ineens dat die tripjes naar de WC wel erg tijdrovend zijn. Terwijl gewoon alles in je luier deponeren helemaal je spel niet onderbreekt.

Kleine tegenvaller voor mama, maar nu is ze dan wel zover.

Sure nice news facts, but have I got NEWS for you…

Minke had her very first Entirely-Dry-Day yesterday!!!!!! Not one single accident.

She decided it was time to get rid of her diaper and sure enough she did perfect. We had some try-outs before. And really this summer I already thought this nut was cracked. But then she figured out these trips to the bathroom sure take a lot of time. While doing your business in your diaper doesn’t interrupt your play time at all.

A minor setback for mom, but now she is really ready.

I’m so TOM [Proud of Minke] =)

She had an early fascination for toilets and toiletpaper (10 mos.)

Fall Break

Na tien weken is het vandaag zover. Eindelijk weer een weekje vakantie. We zijn er allemaal aan toe.

Even geen huiswerk.
Even geen wekker (niet dat die echt nodig is).
Even geen gehaaste ontbijten.
Even geen ‘is het nu al tijd, maar ik heb mijn tanden nog niet gepoetst’.
Even geen broodtrommels voor het overblijven.
Even geen ‘Minke schiet nu op, we moeten de jongens halen!’

Ze hebben alle drie een lijstje gemaakt met wat ze deze vakantie graag willen doen. Met allemaal iets anders op nummer 1.

Jochem wil naar Surf’s Up (een andere film mag ook ). Thijmen wil zijn neefjes en nichtjes zien en Minke wil haar nieuwe Sneeuwwitjes jurk aan.

Moet toch gek lopen dat we deze wensen niet kunnen vervullen…


After ten weeks of school it’s finally time. Time for Fall Break. We can all really use some time off. Just a week of…

No homework.
No alarm clock (like we need one).
No hasty breakfasts.
No ‘is it time already, I haven’t even brushed my teeth yet’.
No lunchboxes.
No ‘Minke hurry up now, we have to pick up the boys !’

All three made a list with things they would really love to do this vacation. Three different number ones.

Jochem really likes to go see Surf’s Up (or another movie). Thijmen wants to see his cousins and Minke likes to wear her new Snow White gown.

Shouldn’t be too hard to grant these wishes, should it….

Plankenkoorts

Aansluitend op de Kinderboekenweek organiseert de basisschool van de jongens altijd een toneelweek. Het thema is hetzelfde als dat van de boekenweek, dus deze keer staan alle liedjes en sketches in teken van ‘Geheimen’.

Vanochtend vroeg komt Thijmen me al een beetje opgewonden wakker maken. Liggen alle kleren al klaar die hij aan moet. Zwarte kleren want hij is SPION en de spijkerbroek met wit T-shirt voor de vlinderdans.

Ik wrijf de slaap uit mijn ogen en ga er maar meteen uit, want hij loopt zo druk op en neer te draven, dat anders iedereen er wakker van wordt. Ik grabbel de grijze broek, shirt en trui (sorry ben niet zo’n fan van zwart voor kinderen) uit zijn kast en stop de outfit voor act 2 in zijn rugzak.

Dan slaat de stress toe. Mam, hoe moet dat nou. Iedereen heeft al dat andere aan, maar ik moet me nog omkleden. Hoe doe ik dat dan?

Ik heb geen flauw idee, maar ga ervan uit dat dat wel door de juf is uitgedacht. Ik probeer hem gerust te stellen met ‘de bomen moeten zich toch ook omkleden’, maar hij blijft onrustig.

Eenmaal op school gaat het wel weer. En als we allemaal om 11 uur mogen komen kijken, is hij helemaal in zijn element en is de plankenkoorts als sneeuw voor de zon verdwenen.

Right after Children’s Book Week, school is organizing a drama week. Theme is always the same as the one CBW is having. So this year all songs and sketches are about ‘Secrets’.

This morning Thijmen woke me up pretty excited. Where are the clothes he is supposed to wear. Black clothes, because he is a SPY and also a pair of jeans and a white Tee for the dance of the butterflies.

Sleepy I rub my eyes and leap out of bed. Hoping his pacing wont’ wake up the other two. I get his gray pants, shirt and sweater (sorry I’m just not a huge fan of black for kids) from his closet and put the outfit for scene 2 in his backpack.

But then he gets really stressed. Mom! How am I going to do this? The others are all wearing their jeans and white shirts already, when do I change?

I don’t have a clue, but guess his teacher has this figured out. I try to calm him down with ‘the trees have to change too’, but he’s pretty antsy.

Once he’s at school, he seems to be OK. And when we all are there to watch the show around 11, he’s right on top of it and his stage fright has vanished completely.

Kijk eens wie er vandaag 1 jaar is geworden!

Het ontging hem allemaal een beetje.

De feesthoed was niet echt aan hem besteed, MAAR toen we met een cadeautje op de proppen kwamen, begon het hem toch te dagen.

OK dit is toch wel leuk. Ik mag lekker papier vreten en snuf snuf wat ruik ik daar…een lekker vers bot.

Nou goed dan, zet dat achterlijke ding maar op mijn kop, zolang ik dat bot maar mag houden :p

He didn’t really quite get it.

And the party hat wasn’t really his thing, BUT when we got out his present, he began to realize this was something good.

OK this is fun afterall. I get to munch on paper and snif snif what’s that…wow a yummy new bone.

All right then, put on that ridiculous hat, as long as I can keep the bone :p
