De Spreekbeurt

De rode draad door ons weekend was De Spreekbeurt van Jochem.

In de kerstvakantie is hij met de voorbereiding begonnen. Twee boeken heeft hij uitgeplozen, drie andere doorgebladerd. Films op Animal Planet gekeken en bij Diergaarde Blijdorp hebben we bij het documentatie centrum De Krokodillendoos opgehaald.

Die dieren kisten [zoals ze ze zelf noemen] zijn super voor spreekbeurten. Ik weet niet of andere dierentuinen dit ook aanbieden, maar zoniet dan zouden ze er echt allemaal mee moeten beginnen =) Want wat een schatten je hierin aantreft. Mijn zus vertelde me er vorig jaar over, toen ging de jaarlijkse spreekbeurt over haaien [ja we houden de vacatures bij Animal Planet al in de gaten ;-)].

Dus ook dit jaar naar Blijdorp gebeld of de krokodillenkist nog beschikbaar was. Gelukkig wel. Toen J ermee thuis kwam, glunderde hij van trots. En ik sloeg stijl achterover. Er zit gewoon een compleet gevilde krokodil in die kist. [Plus een brief die uitlegt hoe je eraan komt, want anders kan je bij een standaard politie controle nog voor een leuke verrassing komen te staan ;-)] Verder nog wat plastic krokodillen varianten en een paar eieren van een Cuba krokodil.

Nu we de spreekbeurt inmiddels zo’n vijf keer voorbij hebben horen komen, zijn we helemaal bijgepraat over krokodillen, alligators en gavialen. Je ziet dat mannetje groeien in zijn verhaal. Iedere keer komt het weer een stukje soepeler uit zijn mond. Ik had vroeger best een hekel aan spreekbeurten. Maar nu is het hartstikke leuk om je eigen kind zich zo in een onderwerp te zien verdiepen en dan zoveel wijzer worden.

This weekend was mainly filled with Jochem’s Presentation.

He started his preparation during the holidays. Two books he read from cover to cover, three others he glanced through. Watched several movies on Animal Planet and we went to the Rotterdam Zoo ‘Blijdorp’ to get a crocodile box.

These Animal crates [as they call them] are simply amazing. I don’t know whether other zoos provide this service, but if not they all really should start =) The treasures that are kept in these boxes. My sister told me about them last year, when J’s presentation was about sharks [yes we already look at job opportunities at Animal Planet for him ;-)].

So this year we called Blijdorp again to see if the gator box was still available. We were lucky. When J got home with the box, he was beaming. And I almost lost it. There’s a complete skinned crocodile in it! [And a letter to explain where you got it from, just in case you get pulled over by the cops;-)] Also the box contains several plastic crocodile species and a few eggs from a Cuba crocodile.

We’ve heard the presentation about five times now. And you can see the guy grow in his story. Every time he practices, the story is getting more smooth. I always hated presentations, but now it’s so much fun to watch your own child dive in a subject and getting so much wiser.
