Eén van die 1500 was mijn eigen held. Het is inmiddels zijn zesde onderscheiding voor vredesmissies.
Nieuw voor ons was dat ook wij een beetje zijn onderscheiden. Ik kreeg een verzilverd roosje om op te spelden [niet echt mijn smaak, maar het gebaar wordt zeker gewaardeerd] en voor de kinderen kreeg R een speciaal kindermedaillon mee. Dat vond ik echt helemaal super.
Ook zij hebben tenslotte een geweldige prestatie geleverd. Drie en een halve maand doorkomen zonder je papa [met andere woorden opgezadeld zitten met alleen maar die moeder ;-)] valt niet mee. Daar verdien je zeker een gigantische medaille voor.
Goed gedaan jongens!
This afternoon 1500 (!) soldiers were decorated in Arnhem for their work in Afghanistan.
One of those 1500 was my own hero. It’s his sixth medal for peace keeping missions.
New to us, were the ‘decorations’ for spouses and kids. I got a silver plated rose [not entirely my taste, but hey it’s the thought that counts] and the kids got a special children’s medallion. That I really think is absolutely super.
After all they have put up a tremendous achievement. Getting through three and a half months without your daddy [in other words being stuck with mom alone ;-)] is not easy. And absolutely worth the biggest medal there is.
So once again guys, well done!

Ik zag het op het nieuws vanavond en moest ook gelijk aan jou denken,
leuk dat ze ook aan vrouw en kinderen hebben gedacht - want die leveren ook zeker een topprestatie!
So the rose isn't beautiful (mine is sitting in a drawer somewhere!), and the ceremony is long (or so I thought with a 6 month old baby!), and ours was sad (because several soldiers died & were injured during Rob's last deployment), but it nonetheless it is so nice to see your hubby be rewarded for his hard work and for us & the kids to be rewarded for ours! Sometimes I think being at home taking care of the kid(s) and waiting for news is harder than flying a helicopter!! Nog 10 dagen! Ik kan echt niet wachten!! :-)

Not too long ago I found my rose in a drawer. Although it represents tough times, I had to smile because it also represents who we have become and the bond that makes us our family!

@ Suz: René already said I already had gotten a rose before. But it totally slipped my mind. Cannot think of the place that other one could be [oopsie]. But I know for sure the kids never received something. So that really was a very nice surprise ;-)
And you're so right. Every deployment is tough, but it does make us stronger too!
