Pimp the Bunny

Without an inkling in your mind, you hop into bed last night.
Grabbed underneath your comforter for your favorite stuffed animal.
And find out your tough
Your eyes nearly pop out of your head, but then you burst into uncontrollable laughter.

A great experience
The guys are home again. They survived their camp [and so did I]. First two days were pretty challenging. Lots of rain, heavy winds and pretty cold [even in August]. And those two days were challenging for me as well. I grabbed the phone several times, ready to give a call to check up on them. But then my tough husband talked me out of it again, saying the staff would surely call us, if anything was wrong. Sure sure!
I felt so relieved when finally the sun was shining again on Thursday, the rain stopped and the winds slowed down somewhat. My visions of tents blowing away [and that really did happen, though not to our kids] and freezing lads in their sleeping bags [luckily smart enough to wear a sweater and pull up that extra fleece blanket at night] faded away so I could enjoy a quiet night again. Evidently roaring thunderstorms, force 7 winds and my offspring some 25 miles from here in a tent , aren’t very conductive to a good night’s sleep ;-)
Yesterday we could pick them up again. They boys were still on the water. Racing each other. So we decided to take a look at their tent. It was still standing as when we left. The inside was somewhat different, but not really that bad. Sure the laundry hadn’t found its way to their laundry bag, but as long as there are no itchy critters crawling through the tent, I’m happy.
We cleaned up the camping gear and put everything in the car. And then enjoyed a lovely afternoon watching our beaming boys. Who learned so much in only four days. They’ve had a great time and most definitely want to go again next summer. And so I learned a lot too in four days. Setting them free is getting a little easier every time [or so I think ;-)].

Het Zeilkamp
Ja ik kon niet meer slapen.
Hoezo niet?
Ik vind het een beetje spannend.
Wat vind je spannend?
Het zeilkamp.
OK. Maar dat wordt hartstikke leuk. Lekker zeilen.

You’re up early!
Yes, I couldn’t sleep anymore.
Why not?
Well I’m a bit antsy.
Why is that?
Because of the sail camp.
OK. But that’s going to be great. Lots of fun sailing. Playing all sorts of fun games with the other kids. And guess what. The theme is Olympic Games. Every day you can win medals. Cool isn’t it.
Yeah right, real cool. But still I’m gonna miss you very much.
We’re gonna miss you too…..mom ;-)

Eerste zeil WEDSTRIJD

Their final sailing lesson ends with a *true* race. Jochem is totally in for it. Not that strange, considering he thinks of life as a never ending race ;-)
Thijmen is a bit nervous. Asking lots of questions and thinks the whole thing is pretty exciting. We just wait and see.
A couple of kids don’t want to participate. But the boys will. They’re ready. Even Thijmen is sure of it. For me by that he has won the majority of the race. Because what does one know about reading maps for instance when 8 years old.
What’s the first buoy? And what color is the next? And after that? As someone with a poorly developed sense of direction, I feel their anxiety. Would be challenging for me as well =)
But they’re doing great. Sail both races according the rules. Never miss one buoy [it does help that one of the instructors, in the rescue boat, shows them the laps in advance]. I’m so proud when they get their medals later on.
They’re so thrilled with both certificate and medal. But the most fun reward is the ‘Old Geezer’s Race’. When the parents jump in the tiny boats to race each other. The kids are yelling until they’re hoarse. And the parents who are not racing [hey someone has to watch the little ones and take pictures ;-)] mainly laugh their heads off. It sure was just another perfect day.

Uitgewandeld
M: Dit is zoooooooo leuk!
We're done walking. Tonight was the final night of the annual four day marching event. Half the people of our town finished their either 5, 10 or 15 K.
The welcome is very festive and warm. Compliments are all around. And you can see the kids grow 2 inches with pride. Mission accomplished.
It's a great event and even a healthy one. Though the final evening might not be that healthy ;-) As local candy stores most definitely got their targets this month =)

Eerste Zeilles

Finally this day came. The both of them have been waiting for today since last August. Ready to board the Optimist for the first time. Ready for their First Sailing Lesson.
They're involved in every aspect of the sport. So they first have to haul the boat from the shelter to the water. Insert daggerboard and attach rudder. And then start paddling and steering to get acquinted with the boat.
After rowing numerous circles on the Kurenpolder, they can head back to shore for some extra gear. For starters some different apparel. Both Optimists are a bit cold in only trunks and Tees. But they also have a sail thrift shop so we found two great wet suits for a bargain. Second round they start dressed a lot warmer.
The real sailing can start now. As they place a mast in the boat. And a S.A.I.L [paddle still joins them too, just in case].
And while the boys haul gear. She hauls water. The entire day.
Every time she goes in the water a little deeper.
Ankle deep...knee deep...thigh deep...tummie deep...and finally around 2 pm the water reaches her armpits. And all of a sudden the fun is over. She is *so* cold.
Her lips are purple, she's shivering and covered in goosebumps. Poor little chicken. I warm her up and put some dry clothes on her. And the rest of the afternoon she'll leave the water for what it is.
They both have a super day. And so does she. And OK we admit it, being in the sun watching the boats in the water isn't a big sacrifice for us either.

De sprong in het diepe

Nummer 1 zoekt altijd uitdagingen. Doet eerst, denkt later. Waardoor we hier heel wat als-dat-maar-goed-gaat momenten beleven.
Nummer 2 is 180 graden anders. Kijkt eerst de kat uit de boom. Vindt veel dingen spannend of doodgewoon eng.

Surprise Chef
I was out the entire day for a course. And when I got home I already smelled this lovely homemade dinner. Usually R deserves all credit. But tonight we had a surprise cook. Thijmen prepared a delicious pasta dinner. Did all the chopping and stirring. It was great!

Voetbalkaartjes
Mam, wanneer gaan we boodschappen doen?
Sorry, WIJ?
Can’t believe I fell for it. Me, the one who has always hated things like Pokémon cards. And never ever plans to spend a dime on those terrible things. Now I did fall for the new [better say old] advertisement trick of Plus Supermarkets.
Get 4 soccer cards for every 10 euro you spend on groceries. J heard about it on TV. Then several classmates showed him their album and soccer cards. Even gave him two cards and the boy was sold.
Mom when are we going grocery shopping?
Excuse me, WE?
Yes when can I go grocery shopping with you?
You must be feeling ill! You never want to go to a store with me.
Well, it has to be a Plus Supermarket.
Aha, there’s the catch. Why Plus? I don’t think we have one around here.
No not here, but a few miles from here there’s one!
[I know because there’s actually one next to my favorite scrapbook store ;-)].
Thanks to Google my sweet boy found out where the nearest Plus Supermarkets are located [dang they’re getting smarter every day]. The entire weekend I put up a struggle. But then this morning after hearing his plea for the umpteenth time I caved. Sure I can check out this Plus supermarket. It’s only 5 miles :p
I got my groceries for the entire week, so collected a fair amount of cards. And of course that promoted me to the best mom in the whole wide world ;-)
While the boys are admiring each other’s cards I’m still in shock. That I fell for this =)

Even geen zwemles meer

We’ve collected the loot!
Now T also got his swim certificate B.
He’s happy. We’re happy! No more swim lessons.
He decided he doesn’t want to continue for C. And as we feel only A and B are mandatory he can stop.
He’s relieved. We’re relieved. NO MORE SWIM LESSONS! [I’ll say it again ;-)].
It’s just one of those things we Dutch think is soooooooo important. [Probably has something to do with the fact Holland is below sea level ;-)] But most of us dread the weekly sessions.
We’re having a two year break. At five M will start her official swim training. She’s still doing her weekly toddler swimming. So hopefully she’ll race through the whole process. Let’s keep our fingers crossed =)

Grand Canyon
1 + 1 = the Grand Canyon.
At first it makes him feel insecure.
Then he says it feels funny.
And finally he starts to giggle and can't stop anymore.
Pretty cool huh =)

Sharkboy has a Gap
A gap, a gap, a GAP!
For the very first time my changing child is having a parking space in his mouth. Thijmen lost his third tooth this afternoon and to my big surprise there’s this huge gap now.
I know what you're thinking now…but with my kids that is really special. As I’m the mother of little sharks...
Normally their new tooth has already broken through before the old baby tooth has disappeared. So when after lots of wiggling and jerking the tiny tooth finally pops out, there’s always this new shining ‘grown up tooth’.
I did a thorough search, but no there’s nothing there. In his lower jaw there are already two new teeth waiting, while the old ones aren’t even loose yet. But not for this new front tooth.
This is so odd ;-), but also extremely cool! =)

Plankenkoorts
Right after Children’s Book Week, school is organizing a drama week. Theme is always the same as the one CBW is having. So this year all songs and sketches are about ‘Secrets’.
This morning Thijmen woke me up pretty excited. Where are the clothes he is supposed to wear. Black clothes, because he is a SPY and also a pair of jeans and a white Tee for the dance of the butterflies.
Sleepy I rub my eyes and leap out of bed. Hoping his pacing wont’ wake up the other two. I get his gray pants, shirt and sweater (sorry I’m just not a huge fan of black for kids) from his closet and put the outfit for scene 2 in his backpack.
But then he gets really stressed. Mom! How am I going to do this? The others are all wearing their jeans and white shirts already, when do I change?
I don’t have a clue, but guess his teacher has this figured out. I try to calm him down with ‘the trees have to change too’, but he’s pretty antsy.
Once he’s at school, he seems to be OK. And when we all are there to watch the show around 11, he’s right on top of it and his stage fright has vanished completely.
